Personal Profile

I am focused technician with a diverse practical and theoretical Mains AC/10kV DC, Audio, Telecomms, Optical Fibre and IT skill set, ideally seeking Offshore Optical Fibre Submarine Telecomms projects where I have previous experience as a fibre splicer/tester as seen on the Marine Projects section below.

I possess adequate written and verbal communication skills, with a natural ability to simplify technical details in lay terms. I also speak some basic conversational Portuguese.

Years of experience in customer facing field engineer roles has given me the ability to solve technical problems and effectively interact with people at all social and professional levels ranging from small companies to multinational corporations that I have worked for in the past (i.e. BT, Alcatel-Lucent) worldwide.

I recently completed a one week C&G 3667-02 fast track Optical Fibre Internal/External refresher course with CTTS Cable Services in Lincoln, UK, covering some of the latest standards and practices for optical data systems installation and testing to City and Guilds Fibre Qualifications

Sea Cable Work History:

Sea Cable Lay Watch Tester – Overall Responsibility

A main expectation of the Alcatel-Lucent Project Managers in Paris is not only that the Contract Technical Staff are proficient in their technical field, but more importantly, are reliable and self-motivated to take as much responsibility for anything they can do to save time and anticipate problems using their own initiative, only leaving major technical and financial decisions to be decided by Senior staff. This is paramount as often a penalty clause system exists when a Project overruns the agreed time scales, which can run into many thousands of dollars in fees. A system of expenses exists so Field Staff can purchase equipment or labour locally as required and so “minor” technical or other issues can be resolved locally as quickly as possible.

Role Specifics

  • Customs/Shipping Agent liaison for Work Permit and Test Equipment documentation procurement
  • Hire car, lodgings, and initial communications methods procurement – find lodgings within suitable minimum distance to site and organise site and personal communications such as local cell phone number and email/Internet.
  • Investigate and report on available site utilities e.g. mains electricity, water and ADSL/telecoms lines for Test Room environment, and source any required hardware or relevant expertise locally (electricians, plumbers etc.)
  • Check on cable system Power Feed Equipment (PFE) state and availability, and liaise with Installation Staff and Commissioning Engineers/Site owners
  • Organise Power Safety communications regime (faxed instructions in writing) for Ship to Shore DC power system (+5000V DC) status in conjunction with available Power Safety Officer
  • Test Equipment Checks – set up optical and electrical test equipment according to available documentation or Senior Engineers requirements. Write documentation/schematics as necessary (laser unit light level power output maxima etc.). Report/order faulty or replacement test equipment to Senior Engineer or Project Manager, and suggest alternatives and organise Test Site 12hr shift patterns
  • Document optical light levels and Insulation Resistance tests as requested by Senior Engineer using OTDR and Megger
  • Periodic feedback via email of Project and Terminal Station building progress to Alcatel-Lucent Project Managers, with photos and suggestions for problem resolution
  • Liaise and cooperate in any possible capacity with other Field or Project Staff (Installers, Commissioning Engineers, Customer Reps, Cable Burial Dive team, Shore-End Cable Crew/Splicers)
  • Splice and test fibre pigtails to main cable if necessary, for connection to Test Equipment
